Carbon Footprint

'What gets measured gets done'... simple but it's true. In order to get to where you want to be, you must first get a baseline of where you are. For environmental sustainability, that means that at some point you will need to understand your carbon footprint.

Understanding your footprint

All of our activities have carbon* emissions tied to them, whether that is from a product, the way we travel or the services we use. A carbon footprint is a measurement of all of the carbon emissions generated from your business activities over a defined period of time.

*The term ‘carbon’ here also refers to the other greenhouse gasses linked to climate change.

Environmental Strategy

For businesses we recommend that a carbon footprint assessment forms part of your wider environmental strategy. Need help developing a strategy for your company?

Completing a carbon footprint assessment

There are four key phases to assessing, understanding and tackling your carbon emissions

Phase 1: Complete a screening exercise

This is a quick way of gaining an overview of your carbon footprint. A top-level assessment approach provides valuable insight into the expected target areas, or ‘hot spots’ within your carbon footprint.

Phase 2: A full carbon footprint

This is a deep dive into all aspects of your operations, considering all relevant scope 1 (direct), 2 and 3 (indirect) emissions. Your first full carbon footprint can be used as a baseline from which you can set targets to reduce emissions.

Phase 3: Set targets to reduce emissions

Once you have a baseline carbon footprint you can set targets for reducing your emissions. Many businesses are making a commitment to Net Zero emissions by 2050 or sooner. We can support you in creating a plan to reduce your own carbon footprint, and advise on how to engage with your suppliers to encourage them to do the same.

Phase 4: Report on an annual basis

If you decide you want to commit to annual reductions and/or a Net Zero target, you will need to report on your carbon footprint annually to track progress. We can support you in setting up and integrating processes into your standard operating procedures, enabling this to happen in a streamlined way each year.
